Caricature Cowboy Bottle Stopper
2-day Class; 5a-b SA 7/13-SU 7/14
Join Steve for two days of caricature carving. The subject of this class is titled “Carving a Cowboy Bottle Stopper.” You will learn:
-Working from a rough-out, add your own details to make the cowboy your own.
-Techniques for creating symmetry (ears, eyes, mustache, sideburns, etc.)
-Carving the hat, eyes, nose, ears, optional mustache, beard, whiskers, teeth, scar, etc.
-Mounting the bottle stopper
-Paint techniques (discussion only)
-Antiquing techniques (discussion only)
The students will spend the first day creating the structure of their cowboy from the rough-out. They will start by cleaning up the rough-out. They will practice a variety of techniques for ensuring that the ears, eyes, etc., are placed on the piece symmetrically. They will start to add the details. On the second day, they will complete the detailing of their piece and mount it to their choice of bottle stopper (cork or chrome). Students will work one on one with Steve on a rotating basis. As opportunities to demonstrate a particular concept arise, I’ll stop the class and demonstrate a technique or concept. I find that I learn as much from my students as they learn from me, so I encourage questions and an open dialogue.
Tools needed: Carving Knife (medium), Carving knife (detail), carving glove, finger guard, chisels, V-tools, gouges, micro gouges and v-tools, calipers, pencil, notepad (for doodling, taking notes, etc.), phone (for taking pictures or videos of demonstrations, checking your email, trashing me on social media, etc.), water bottle.
Number of students: 4 minimum and 10 maximum.
The full 2 day class fee of $50 is due at time of registration. Cost of the cowboy bottle stopper rough-out is $10. The chrome bottle stopper is $3. The cork bottle stopper is free. These fees are payable to Steve on the day of the class.
