KENT SPERRY
Native American Style Flute 1 Day Classes: SU 7/14, MO 7/15,
TH 7/18, FR 7/19
This is Kent’s second year as an instructor at the Rendezvous, although he has been attending as a student for the past few years. He started making and playing Native American Style Flutes at the beginning of the COVID pandemic.
Each class will be one day long. Flutes will be pre-tuned to either A, G, or F sharp. The difference in the flutes is for the hand size of the player. Flutes in the key of A can be played more easily by people with small hands. F sharp will feel more comfortable for those with big hands. G is the recommended beginning flute.
The class will involve shaping your flute by using only palm planers and sandpaper. If a student would prefer to carve the flute, they are welcome to, however the wood is Western Red Cedar which has a tendency to split under a knife. The student will then decorate the flute. If time permits and the student so desires, the block can be carved. (The block is what directs the breath into the flute. It is generally carved into a simple, stylized animal. Kent will help you.)
He will also teach you the basics of flute playing, so you will be able to show off your new skill by the end of the day! Plan on having fun in this class.
The full 1-day class fee of $100, which includes the pre-tuned flute kit and supplies, is due at time of registration.
Number of students: 1 minimum, 10 maximum. All skill levels, carving and non-carving, are welcome. No musical knowledge needed.
Tools needed: a small palm planer and various grits of sandpaper. For those who have the desire to carve their block in class, a carving knife will be needed. Kent will have some sandpaper and a few palm planers available.
Questions may be directed to Kent by emailing him at Sperry80234@gmail.com.
