Carve "COLT"
SUSAN L. HENDRIX
3-Day Class: 6a-c SA-MO OR 6d-f TU-TH
The first 2 days will be carving Colt. Susan’s emphasis will be on the face and how to carve it so the student can replicate the steps on their own. The 3rd day she will teach how to paint Colt to make the carving “striking” and “pop” next to other carvings. If you are a fast carver, you may be able to carve more than one.
Susan teaches her carving classes in a 10-minute, one-on-one style, with 2 students coming up to the table at the same time, each one receiving 10 minutes of instruction while the other one listens thereby being able to listen to the instructions given twice. Sometimes she will teach all the students a step in the carving at the same time.
The painting class will be done as more of a lecture at first, giving a lot of painting information that is generic but so useful. Then she will begin the 10-minute around the table teaching.
The full 3-day class fee of $150 is due at time of registration. The cost of the rough-out, $39, is payable to Susan on the first day of class.
Number of students: 6 minimum, 10 maximum.
All skill levels are welcome.
Tools needed: Tablet and pen for notes; Rough-out knife; a Detail knife; a large V-tool (#12/8mm or #12/6mm); U-gouges: #11/3mm, #11/1mm, #9/10mm, #9/5mm, #8/7mm, and either a #3/18mm or a #2/16mm; and, a Dockyard #9/5mm. These are the tools Susan uses the most, but remember that there are other tools that can be used to carve similar shapes. She will bring extra tools that will be the same shapes as those listed. She will also bring her sharpener so she can help keep your tools sharp. Susan will provide the paint and brushes for students to use.
