Beginning Chip Carving
This two day class is mainly for beginners, but a good brush up for intermediate. Just bring yourself. All materials and patterns will be supplied. A chip carving knife will be supplied that will be returned or purchased (carvers own knife may be used). First D: Emphasis will be on how to hold the chip carving knife while maintaining a consistent 50 to 60 degree angle. I will demonstrate how to carve two and three sided chips and how to evaluate the cuts and improve your technique. We will discuss where to find patterns and how to transfer them onto a project. I will constantly check each carver and give comments on the progress and how to improve their technique and answer any questions they may have. I will discuss the bad habits all new chip carvers pick up during their learning process so they can be aware and change to correct technique. Moisture content of wood will be discussed and the problems that will be faced if wood is too dry and how too solve this problem. The importance of a sharp knife and demonstration of sharpening method. Second Day: Review proper technique, go over any questions, learn to carve gothic leaf design, chatter free curves, and how to maintain a straight line. We will transfer the new practice pattern and the project patterns. You will practice the new techniques and work on project (choice of coasters or Christmas ornaments) and we will go over different finishing techniques.
