Mountain Man Face
A study in carving the human face with a beard and mustache. Special emphasis will be placed on detailing the face and carving the “heavy lidded eyes”. The first class will be a mountain man face from a basswood roughout. The rough out measures 5 ½ inches in height by 3 ½ inches in width and 1 ½ inches in depth. The cost of the class $60 and the roughout will be $20 and will come with a 3/8 inch wooden dowel, a wooden base and a 4 view colored go-by-sheet. The class size will be minimum 8 students and maximum 12 students at all skill levels.
Tools required: A couple of sharp detail/bench knives, with blade lengths of approximately ¾ to 1 inch long. Palm gouges with two profiles/sweeps as follows: #3, #5, #7, #9, #11. The size of tools as follows: 2mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 9mm,10mm, 12mm and 14mm. Also a couple of V-tools no larger than 10mm is needed. Micro carving tools will be very helpful for carving in facial detail. The set I use is manufactured by *Dockyard and is labeled “Gouge Set”. These tools have a #9 sweep and range in size from 2mm up to 6mm. A carving glove for your protection is recommended. If you don’t like wearing a glove then you might want to pack a box of Band-aids.
Cost is $60 plus roughout ($20). The $25 deposit for the class is applied toward the cost of the class. The remainder of the fees are due to the instructor at the start of class.
