Chip Carving
On Saturday and Sunday, Kathy will teach Chip Carving.
Beginners will cover the basics of how to hold a chip carving knife, proper form, and safety. She will teach how to make and transfer a pattern, how to make two and three sided chips. She will go over how to sharpen the knife and a simple finishing technique. A practice board will be provided at no extra charge. When the student is comfortable with making these chips, she will have optional project blanks available.
Intermediate students will review the basics of proper form and safety then she will teach common shapes in chip carving such as the Gothic leaf, straight lines, circles, half-moons, and square chips. The class will discuss how to avoid chip out and cutting with the grain.
Advanced students will review the basics of proper form and safety. She will teach lettering and numbers. How to achieve smooth curves, free form carving and more advanced finishing techniques. Finishing techniques will be DISCUSSION ONLY.
Tools needed for chip carving: chip carving knife and a light.
The full class fee of $40 for each day taken is due at time of registration. Project blanks will be available ranging in price from $5-40 with patterns included.
