Caricature Bottle Stopper
Caricature Bottle Stoppers Mon-Weds. July 14-16; 3 day class
Join carving Instructor, Steve Gurnett, for three days of caricature carving.
What you will learn: • Working from a rough-out, add your own details to make the bottle stopper your own • Techniques for creating symmetry (ears, eyes, mustache, sideburns, etc.) • Carving the hat, eyes, nose, ears, optional mustache, beard, whiskers, teeth, scars, etc. • Mounting the bottle stopper • Paint techniques (time permitting) • Antiquing techniques (time permitting) The students will spend the first day creating the structure of their caricature from the rough out. They will start by cleaning up the rough-out. They will practice a variety of techniques for ensuring that the ears, eyes, etc. are placed on the piece symmetrically. They will start to add the details. On the second day, they will complete the detailing of their piece and mount it to the bottle stopper (cork) and prep the carving for painting on the third day. On the third day, they will paint and antique their pieces.
Students will work one on one with him on a rotating basis. As opportunities to demonstrate a particular concept arise, he’ll stop the class and demonstrate a technique or concept.
He finds that he learns as much from his students as they learn from him, so he encourages questions and an open dialogue.
