Cottonwood Bark Carving
Aaron and Andy Mayer 7a-e, 1-day classes,
SA, SU, MO, TU, WE July 11-15
Aaron & Andy will be working together to teach you the bark carving project of your choice. Students will learn to design, carve, shape, and detail these fun projects. Each will improve and give you new skills. Choose as many days as meet your needs.
Projects are: ONE DAY recommended for these projects:
*WHIMSICAL BARK HOUSE: Learn the basics of designing and carving a simple whimsical bark house.
*MINIATURE CABIN: Students will begin with a piece of bark 2” x 2”- 3”x 3” and design and carve their own cabin, learning the basics of detail in miniature. Students may want to bring magnifiers.
TWO DAYS recommended for these projects:
*COTTAGE: Carved from two pieces of bark and joined together for a near seamless fit and, if time allows, a tree to enhance the house.
*FAIRY-TALE HOUSE or MUSHROOM HOUSE: Carved from two pieces of cottonwood bark and shaped to a burl or a knot.
*TREE HOUSE: Carve a whimsical treehouse out of two pieces of cottonwood bark, shaped around a piece of found wood for the trunk.
THREE DAYS recommended for this project:
*CHURCH: This project may be a bit challenging, even for experienced carvers, but it will help take your skill to the next level. Students will begin with a piece of cottonwood bark cut out to the basic shape of a church. You will learn new and different techniques to create your own customized details, using your own ideas or from pictures of churches that will be provided.
FEE: The full class fee, which includes materials, of $65/day is due at time of registration.
Number of students: 5 minimum and 10 maximum.
Skill Level: Intermediate and Advanced only
Tools needed: Carving knife & safety glove, 3/32 v-tool, needle file set (may be purchased from instructor for $10.00), pin vise with small drill bits, 1/8” & 1/4” #1 chisels, 5/8” #7 U-gouge. For church class only, drafting compass, ruler, & large metal file.
