SUSAN L. HENDRIX
2-Day Classes: 5a-b SA-SU, 5c-d MO-TU
1-Day Class: WE
I will bring many different ornament blanks to carve. I will teach how I get depth and roundness in a flat piece of wood, so the ornament will show up and "pop" on a tree. I will bring my paints so if anyone is wanting to learn how to paint so their carvings will pop, I will show them on the second day of the two-day classes. But if they prefer to only carve on the second day, I will accommodate that too.
I teach my carving classes in a 10-minute, one-on-one style, with 2 students coming up to the table at the same time, each one receiving 10 minutes of instruction and being able to listen to the instructions given, twice (if they want to).
Sometimes I will try to bring all the students to the same step in the carving and then I will teach everyone the next step at the same time, if the information can be used for all the students.
The painting class will be done as more of a lecture at first, giving a lot of painting information that is generic but so useful. (You may want to bring a tablet and take notes) Then I will begin the 10 minute around the table teaching. In the painting class I move around the table to where you are sitting so you and your paints can stay put.
The full 2-day (SA/SU, MO/TU) class fee of $100 is due at time of registration.
The full 1-day class fee, $50, on Wednesday is due at time of registration.
The cost of the rough-out, $12, is payable to Susan on the first day of class. (I supply the paint. No extra cost for paint. I will bring the brushes [unless you have favorite ones you prefer to bring and use. )
Number of students: 0 minimum, 12 maximum.
All skill levels are welcome.
Tools needed for the project: Detail knife or two, Rough out knife or two, a large V- tool (#12/8mm) or a (#12/6mm), #11/3mm (U gouge), #11/1mm (U gouge, #9/10mm (½ round, #9/5mm ( ½ round), # 8/7mm (close to a ½ round in shape) and either a #3/18mm or a #2/16mm (shallow gouges about ¾” wide) and a Dockyard #9/5mm (½ round). These are the tools I use the most, but remember that there are other tools that can be used to carve similar shapes. I will bring my extra tools that will be the same shapes as those listed. I will bring my sharpener so I can help you keep your tools sharp.
