GARGAC, MARK

Mountain Man Walking Stick -- Mark Gargac, nationally known carving instructor from Broomfield, CO specializes in carving faces in found wood. His subject matters have included Mountain & Frontiersmen, Indians, Cowboys, Wizards & gnomes, Santa's & Elves, and many more. His carving style embellishes a slight hint of exaggerated realism and intricate facial detailing. The project he has chosen for this year's Rendezvous is carving Mountain Man face in a basswood walking Stick. The carved Mountain Man face measures: 4 inches from the top of the hat to the bottom of the beard x 1 ¾ inches across the widest part of the face. If you have ever wanted to carve a detailed face in a walking stick, then this is the class for you. Mark will start with the very basics of facial anatomy of carving in the fundamental foundations of the mountain man face in the walking stick in which later, on the second day of class, all the fine and intricate details will be carved. Mark says "all the detail in the world will not look correct, unless the basic, fundamental foundation of the face is established first". The class begins with a brief discussion on facial anatomy and placement of the facial features. Then it's on to the carving process with a series of separation cuts and roughing in the fundamental foundation of the mountain man face. On the second day of class, it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty, adding the fine and intricate details to your carvings. Special attention and time will be paid to carving in the eyes and areas around the eyes which will add life to your carvings. Also on the second day, each carver will have personal one-on-one time with the instructor to discuss any problem areas they may have on their carving and how to correct them if needed. Emphasis on the class will be focused on each carver taking home a carved mountain man walking stick, and, to further assist each carver with a better understanding of a more detailed carving while still allowing each to add the personal touches which will help make their carvings their own. Extra Class Bonus - Instructional DVD: Carving instruction can continue long after the class is over. Any and all carvers taking the class will receive a "Carving a Mountain Man Walking Stick DVD with over 90 minutes of up- close and highly detailed carving instruction by Mark Gargac. Finishing the Mountain Man walking stick is also covered on the DVD. Tools needed: #7 - 6mm, 8mm, 12mm gouges, #9 - 6mm gouge, small V tool; Micro carving tools with a #9 sweep 2, 3, 4, 5 mm and, a bench knife with a blade length of ¾ - 1 1/4-inches and a detail knife. Any tool with # 5,7,8,9 or 11 sweep will work. Please be considerate of other carvers and have tools sharp and ready to use. B/I Maximum 12, Minimum 6 students. Cost of the 2- day class is $85 plus $20 for the basswood walking stick (approx. 60" in length), 4-view colored go-by and finishing sheets and the Instructional DVD.
