PRICE, PAUL

Facial Anatomy in Clay - Start with a fast paced Human Facial Anatomy review. Then it is sculpting time. You will create a realistic head several times during the course of the day, so don't get too attached to your first attempt. The goal is to become familiar with correct proportions, so that you can transfer your new found knowledge from clay to wood (where you only get one shot). The afternoon session will have a surprise exercise, then on to some fun expressions - they're much easier in clay. Please wear some old clothes (an apron is a good idea too), as clay can be messy. Tools are not required, but if you have sculpting tools, bring them along. Paul will have Popsicle sticks and paper clips that serve as great substitutes. You will also want a garbage bag to wrap your sculpture for the trip home. Note that petroleum based clays are not allowed on commercial aircraft! B/I/A, Max 12 Min 6 Cost is $40, plus $20 for Armature, Clay and Printed Materials.

16c Mon. 7/14 PRICE, PAUL Caricature Eyes - For most carvers, getting the eyes right is the most challenging aspect of a project. Through enlightening visual examples and demos, learn the keys to carving dramatic and engaging eyes. Both realistic and caricature styles will be studied. Take home handouts and an example stick, so you'll never forget Paul's basic steps for eyes. Feel free to bring along a current project for critiquing and assistance. Note that this class filled up last year, so sign up early. Required tools: carving glove, sharp knife and at least one #7, #9 or #11 gouge in the 1/4 inch neighborhood. Optional tools: larger or smaller #9 or #11, V-tool. B/I/A, Max 10 Min 6 Cost is $40, including a practice stick.

Your practice stick will be a valued asset when you are carving your next masterpiece at home. Feel free to bring along a current project for critiquing and assistance. Required tools: Same as 16c above. I/A, Max 10 Min 6 Cost of 1 day class is $40, including a practice stick. Adults only, as we will be carving very aggressively.

He's carved over two thousand and taught many people to carve them, while teaching safety reasons for doing the steps in that manner. The Little People measure 1 x 1 x 2 inches and are carved in the Jack Price style. Many examples will be available at class time, such as farmers, bankers, Santa Clause, and firemen. Everyone taking the class will be given a go-by carving to keep for future use, fully painted. For those carvers that have previously taken this class, I'll also offer a little larger caricature (5 ¼ inches tall) from a block layout to carve. The larger caricature is going to be a 2-piece (head and body separate). The same principal carving the little people will be used to carve the larger caricature. Body wood size will be 1 ¼ x 1 ¼ x 4 inches long. The head wood size will be 1 ¼ x 1 1/4 x 2 ¼ inches. This will allow us to turn the head on the caricature to express more action.
