GARGAC, MARK

Indian Carving Full Relief  - The project this nationally known wood carver and instructor from Broomfied CO. has created for this year’s woodcarving rendezvous is an Indian in basswood, carved in full relief, and a Mountain Man in basswood carved in full relief. The basswood rough out measures approximately 14-inches by 4-inches by 3-inches. A brief discussion on facial anatomy and the placement of facial features on your rough out will take place before carving begins. Emphasis in the class will be in assisting each carver with obtaining an enjoyable experience in carving the Indian rough out. Each carver will be carving off of an Instructor supplied carving bench and vice. I will help each carver set up their rough out on the carving vice for safe carving. I mainly used #3,#5,#7,#9, and #11 sweeps in carving tools. A small set of micro tools ranging from 2-5 mm gouges are helpfull. A coupe of sharp bench and detail caving knives. A carving mallet is helpful but not extremely necessary. The Indian carving class is for Saturday and Sunday. The Mountain Man carving class is for Monday and Tuesday. B/I/A  Max 10  Min 6  Cost $95 plus $35 for the blank.

LICHTI, LOREN

Loren Lichti

Introduction to Stone Carving  - Loren will be teaching the art of stone carving, using only hand tools.  Alabaster, Marble, and Soapstone will be used if available.  Participants will complete a small "stylized" animal carving of a Bear, Buffalo, or Sea Turtle.  Participants can expect to complete the project in two to three days, depending on which animal is chosen. The turtle being the most simple and the bear requiring the most time.  The size and hardness of the stone selected will also impact how long it will take to complete the project.  To broaden the experience, students will also have the opportunity to practice some hammer and chisel work on a larger stone.  This class is designed for people who have never tried to carve stone or for those who have only done it a few times.  All classes will be held outdoors and all tools will be supplied by the Instructor.  To see some examples of Loren's work go to lorenlichtifineart.com.  He has been carving stone for 35 years, and is confident that if you love to carve wood you will also love to carve stone.  Young people over the age of 16 are welcome in this class.  If you have any questions, potential participants may contact Loren at lichti.loren@gmail.com.  Students should bring a towel and a small Tupperware or plastic container with a lid, to save the rock dust that can be used for polishing of the stone.  B/I  Max 15  Min 5  Cost $50 plus $35 to $65 for the blanks.

Principles of Movement In Design  - This class is designed to challenge a person’s way of viewing woodcarving altogether. The emphasis is on sculpting wood into a series of lines, planes, and forms. Simple principles of movement are repeatedly applied and exercised as students turn a piece of found wood (primarily Mesquite or West Texas Juniper) into polished fluid forms. Once learned, these principles become tools that can be applied in furniture making, woodturning, woodcarving, or classic sculpting.
Students will learn the use of the cabinet maker’s pattern rasp, designing a piece to shine, and how to finish wood to a glass like glowing finish. They will also learn how to bring out the full potential of a piece of wood by finding, simplifying, and refining the inherent lines, planes and forms found in the wood. Use of grain pattern is also touched upon.
Students may learn to remove wood and establish planes through the use of gouge and mallet or power carving with typhoon burrs on the end of a flex shaft power tool.

Students will sculpt an abstract sculpture that can stand alone or be used as a base for an additional representational sculpture of a bird, fish, or other subject. For example, the sculpture in this class would serve as the mount and base for the bird completed in Josh Guge’s class.
Students will learn:
1. The principles of movement, balance, and design.
2. Directing the eye through lines and planes.
3. Relating your sculpture to a base.
4. Designing a piece to receive a glasslike finish.
5. Recognizing wood grain from the outside.
6. Harnessing grain to enhance detail.
7. The use of cabinet maker’s pattern rasp.
8. The use of gouge and mallet (hand carving).
9. Use of typhoon burrs on flex shaft (power carving).

*A variety of blanks from $15.00 to $75.00 will be available for purchase.
We will be working on an abstract sculpture which will serve as a finished sculpture or can be incorporated with another piece such as Josh Guge’s carved Western Tanager bird, and serve as a base. Principles of movement, balance, and design will be the emphasis of the course.
If you have any questions, or want to talk to me about your piece please feel free to email me at parables@jchristopherwhite.com, or call me at 970-290-4140 as soon as possible.
I look forward to working with you.    B/I/A  Max 12  Min 1  Cost $190 plus $15 to $75 for the blank,
